First and foremost, there are only two major types of sealcoat. The first is Coal-tar based emulsion and the second is asphalt based emulsion. There has been a common confusion of an "oil based" sealer. This is wrong, sealcoat is not a paint, therfore no oil or latex based products. However, there is a product known as gilsonite that is a chemical bound product that dries shiny. This is NOT a sealer in any way. It was designed to give older asphalt a newer look without providing any protection. There have been a few "out-of-towners" that have made their way through southern maryland using this product mixed with acetone, diesel fuel, kerosene and even used motor oil. All of these products are extremely harmful to the tar that holds together the aggregate in your driveway. I'm sure anyone who has had their driveway done by these have found out just what the damage of these products are. I have received endless calls about customers wishing to try and recover their driveway after these products have ruined them. The coal-tar based emulsion is the strongest, longest lasting, superior sealcoat available. It offers great protection against normal wear and weathering, water run-off and U.V. damage. It is the only one that provides protection against gasoline and oil spills. It dries rich and black in color. The asphalt based emulsion sealcoat also dries very rich and black in color. It adds protection against U.V. damage, normal wear and some water run-off. The asphalt based sealcoat is strong but only last approximately 35% of the life of Coal-tar Based sealcoat. Store bought sealers are usually a very dilluted asphalt based sealcoat with no additives
